Geotextiles are used globally in a variety of commercial construction projects, and here at IFG Drake we produce the high quality, polypropylene fibres used to manufacture these. Polypropylene fibres have a variety of physical qualities which make them ideal to be used in the production of geotextiles, including for containment purposes in landfills and reservoirs.
In reservoir construction, geotextiles are used as a barrier between the soil and waterproof membrane because of their durability and toughness. Installing a geotextile below the membrane separates it from the soil and acts as protection against perforation from rocks, roots, and debris. This ensures that the membrane is unaffected by potential punctures and produces a reinforced layer above the soil to protect the system from rot and perforations.
IFG Drake choose to produce polypropylene fibres because they add chemical resistance to geotextiles. This is particularly useful in landfill construction where a layer of geotextile is laid in the landfill site to separate the soil from the waste. The chemical resistance of the fibres stabilises the geotextile and protects it from deteriorating in chemically rich soils and prevents leaching of chemicals from the site.
Separation is also important to ensure the long-term durability of a landfill site. When used as an overlayer, geotextiles help to control odour, blowing litter, and fire. Using a geotextile, as opposed to commonly used soil, has many benefits; soil is expensive to transport, consumes landfill space and poses issues to the waste when wet. Using a geotextile means that the overlying layer is reusable, cost effective, easy to remove and install, while easing the impact precipitation has on waste decomposition.
